TORONTO - The fifth annual Renewing Our Spirit; Self, Family, Nation, conference of Torah in Motion takes place at Shaarei Shomayim Congregation on Nov. 4 and 5.
The event is held in memory of Nathan Noteh Krauss.
The program begins Saturday night, at 8:15, with a panel discussion titled "Engagement and Disengagement: The future of Religion in the Land of Israel," moderated by Elliott Malamet. Panellists include Rabbi Chaim Brovender, dean, Ohr Torah Stone Colleges in Israel; Adam Ferziger, associate director, graduate program contemporary Jewry, Bar-Ilan University in Rehovot; Rabbi Pinchas Hayman, an expert in Talmud education; and Rabbi Francis Nataf, educational director, David Cardozo Academy in Jerusalem.
Subjects to be dealt with on Sunday include blogs; the shift to the right in contemporary Orthodoxy; the relationship between the Orthodox and the non-observant; Jewish education; Jewish meditation; and religious censorship in the information age.
Participants will include Rabbi Gil Student, who operates the HirhurimMusings blog; Samuel Heilman, professor of sociology at Queen's College in New York; Rabbi Daniel Feldman, a rebbe at Yeshiva University; Rabbi Marvin Schick, president of Jacob Joseph School in New York; and Mindy Ribner, founder and director of Beit Miriam, a centre for spirituality and meditation
Cost of the full program is $40, which includes lunch. Saturday night or any single session is $15. Cost after Oct. 30 for the complete program is $50.
